Youth in Government

Take the Lead. Make Your Voice Heard.

Minnesota Youth in Government (YIG) gives students the chance to run a realistic model of our state government. This is an exciting opportunity for high school students wanting to learn how the government works by doing the work themselves, not just watching from the sidelines.

Students can choose to take part as legislators, judges, attorneys, lobbyists, media members, or cabinet officials – there's something for everyone!

YIG starts in the fall with bi-weekly meetings during WIN sessions. You’ll learn about state government, build leadership skills, and prepare for the State Conference in January. Before the main event, students attend a one-day training in October called LAUNCH.

From January 8–11, 2026, over 1,000 students will gather in Minneapolis and at the State Capitol for the 72nd Annual Youth in Government Assembly, a four-day experience where students take over the government and bring their ideas to life. You’ll debate real issues, pass legislation, argue court cases, report breaking news, or run a full executive branch with other students from across the state. You’ll stay overnight at the Hilton Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis and there will be fun, structured events in the evening for you to enjoy as well.

YIG is a great way to meet new people, grow as a leader, and make an impact.
